Meta's new subscription service monetises our data rights 🏧

Thousands of people exercised their data protection rights and asked Meta to stop using their personal data for advertising.

Their response? Users must consent to the use of their personal data for targeted advertising, or cough up the dosh to opt out.

To respect our data rights, Meta must offer a tracking free version to implement this in a lawful way.

@openrightsgroup

Meta is blackholed at the edge of my network.

Quit using corporate social media. No one needs Facebook or Whatsapp, full stop.

To be fair, the EU has especially left a hole in the cookie opt out scheme to have comoanies use the network effect to press us into either financial investment or giving up our data.

Iirc, it is legal for companies to ask for either money or our data.

Collecting and monetizing data should be illegal to begin with. It should especially be illegal to make data a product to sell/ask for.

@openrightsgroup Oh, great, Meta is officially selling our privacy now. 'Want your data not to be used for ads? Pay up!' Classic modern internet…
