Main difference between #socialmedia and #onlinecommunity is the algorithm -- in community, the participants, not the provider, choose where to put their attention. It's easy enough to spin up your own forum, discord, google group at little to no cost.

@hrheingold They stopped teaching Virtual Community course at U Mich some years ago. To make room for more classes on creating algorithms around advertising.

@samrose Considering that I started talking about crap detection in 2009, I'd have to say that the major educational failure of this century is the absence of instruction on how to sift the info from the disinfo and misinfo -- starting in middle school

@hrheingold and, most importantly, in a community that's the community itself gaining from the exchange and there's no exploitation.
It should be obvious but something most users tend to underestimate or, perhaps, are even happy with as long as the can get their 15 minutes of fame?
