Some projects are fine with WB as a backend and a custom frontend (eg static site via Snowman), others actually use WB, or WB + SMW, as a kind of frontend (for data editing) and then what is needed is another standards compliant DB, i.e. another triple store in the backend for data retrieval. And with the #ECHOLOT project we're sort of taking a path in the middle of radically rethinking mediawiki's framework as frontend and backend for data management.
