I've been too busy to post the rest of the #OpenEd25 conference today, but I am at my last session for today, titled "Collaborating With the Intended Audiences of your OER Project: Visualizing Engineering Concepts through Open Resources!"
Meg Brown-Sica and Macarena Lange (Colorado State University) are teh presenters for this session, about a $2 mil project funded by the US Department of Education for VECTOR (Visualize Engineering Concepts Through Open Resources Project), a multi-institutional project led by three CSU campuses.
Engineering Mechanics courses (Statics, Dynamics, and Mechanics of Materials) are the major courses targeted by this grant, and the goal is to meet the complex needs of students who need to connect the mathematical concepts to physical things.
The open visualizations developed by this team are intended to support engineering students' unique needs. The team has 3 years to create the repository for the project, but a major piece of the work is also to meet and collaborate with their intended audience to make sure the materials are used.
Questions they had to ask when considering this audience were "who IS the primary audience?" for them, it's engineering faculty and students, so they wanted feedback from faculty to ensure that the visualizations would be useful and relevant to a wide range of educators in this field
The team ran in-person and virtual feedback opportunities to connect with educators from across Colorado, asking "what do you want this to look like, for you to actually use the materials?" Next year, they plan to present nationally to spread the word more.
The process this team took to get feedback, and the questions they asked potential users, helped them shape and build their work more efficiently. The real focus of this presentation is to highlight the power of feedback and collaboration with external educators during OER development, not just as reviewers.
