What makes me feel safe is software that has been developed by community. for the interest of all. it isn't a symbol for itself. but I know with free software I am safe. a shield/key/padlock seems psychological manipulation to make me feel safe on a website that isn't one in the first place; a positioning of argument to counter my scared thoughts;
Symbols are for the symbols minded;
Therefore, we aught to understand intent to feel safe; and that, comes from within
