If you are trying to choose a Mastodon server to join or move to, I've put together an easy-to-understand non-technical guide to help:

The guide tries to answer all the most common questions people have about choosing a Mastodon server. If there's something I've missed, feel free to ask in the replies 🙂
The section "I just want you to recommend one good server" should probably recommend a couple of them.
People saying "I just want you to…" are the ones who just click the default button at joinmastodon.

I am trying to encourage exactly these people to join mas.to instead of mastodon.social?
I know you are meaning well, but replacing one default, go-to instance by another is not the solution, IMHO. Especially because you get urgend to present just one option.
Making them choose is the solution. Even if it's just between 3-5 options.
I am telling them to use the directories at the top of the guide.
When I've offered a shortlist, I get people complaining about the "paralysis of choice" so I'm trying to also give a single option for those who want it. Mas.to is one twentieth the size of mastodon.social so it's a much better option.
However, I will rotate that single choice over time so that it directs people to a variety of servers.
(This is what JoinMastodon should be doing, but they're failing to do so 😞 )
Rotation is also a nice strategy. Thank you for elaborating on this!
It's what Nextcloud do when promoting public instances, a single choice but they have a script to rotate it on each page load 🙂
