You probably know a few intersex people, but it's quite possible you don't know they are intersex.
For far too long, variations in sex characteristics have been treated as taboo and resulted in people being subjected to medically unnecessary surgery, scarring, loss of sensation and lifelong shame.
We need to strengthen the 'special medical procedure' provisions in the Family Law Act 1975 so pro-surgery doctors can't do everything but a gonadectomy and then present the gonadectomy as 'medically necessary' to complete the work they've already done.

@tooheymatthew I was one of the ACT Government Ministers when we passed those laws. A lot of time and work went into conversations with intersex people, their families, and clinicians to get the wording right. Children and young people being given time and support to decide if and when and how any intervention happens is important for their human rights.
@emmadavidson I know you were, and what legendary leadership from you and other ministers in the ACT Government. Love your work!
