@Crissy @duckyf33t Hmm… your posts randomly showed up and I think it a clarification is warranted.
1. The standard character limit for the Mastodon® software is 500.
2. Other software, like WriteFreely, Lemmy, mbin, Misskey, Friendica, have a different default number of characters.
3. Other instances also running the Mastodon software, or a fork of Mastodon, have a different number of maximum characters.
4. Some mobile clients lack the feature to detect the correct number of charracters allowed by an instance.
It has nothing to do with censorship, or moderators placing a character limit on your account. At least I haven't seen such a moderation feature (and I've seen moderation features of some of the software I've mentioned above).
There is no conspiracy or anything. The character limit is highly dependent on the instance you are on, and the mobile app you are using. The de facto standard is 500.
I hope this dispels the confusion.
