Listening to Chlöe Swarbrick talking with Zack Polanski on his Bold Politics podcast;

https://shows.acast.com/bold-politics-with-zack-polanski/episodes/68eeb23658893bb6e3e57b1a

When they talked about the post-war welfare state and the neoliberal coup, it got me a bit weepy.

Anyone born from 1980 on, has one advantage over the rest of us; for them, this state of decay is how it's always been. They haven't had to watch successive govts take a wrecking ball to the caring society and close-knit communities they grew up with.

Those born after about 1980 grew up in the demolition, with no memory of what came before. So unless they had parents or close relatives who taught them recent political history, it was easy to swallow the comforting lie that the wreckage all around them was really part of a renovation. Necessary to fix the terrible, broken "Polish shipyard" the country had been before they were born.

The rest of us lack the luxury of such political amnesia. The grief is ongoing.
