About 20 years ago, I bought a book called "Linux Pocket Guide: Essential Commands", and read it, cover-to-cover.

It was one of the best things I've done, in terms of learning about, and improving my use of, Linux.

I also think very highly of:

* Practical vim
* All the books I've read by @mwl

When I started to use git more recently, I read a book about it.

Online tutorials are fine for some things, but a decent textbook really does still hold its own.

@neil You've now done more to actually learn git than any developer I know.

Including myself.

@troed Ha!

I spent a couple of evenings reading a book, and honestly it went from a vague notion in my mind to "oh, wow, that is how it all works!".
