I'm in. Trouble-free initial installation of OS2 Warp 3 Connect Blue 8.200. I'm not going to use the network and internet features here, but I went for the nicest and fullest-featured version on offer just because they have usually already eliminated the worst early bugs.

The sound driver (AWE32) works. Nice zippy sound effect when I shut down the system. 1stRun HDD now 7zipped and backed up.

Let's see what this bad boy can do.

OS/2 3 Connect 8.200 Desktop on first boot. Looks a lot like the OS/2 2.11 Desktop, but with different icons scattered about. The System pane is open, plus some sort of toolbox at the bottom of the screen where a dock would go.

SVGA running, but if I try for >256 (8-bit) colour the window contracts to a tall narrow strip. Still only accepts BMP for wallpaper (they are after all the native bitmap). Might be worth making more BMPs in various colour depths. I used to have software that could do a pretty slick job of that. Might also be worth trying an actual S3 Virge DX/GX driver, because PCem directly supports that emulation, and settling on 1024x768 as standard for OS/2. 1280x1024 really stretches antique tech.

OS/2 3 Desktop at 1280x1024x256. The wallpaper is the black-and-white map of Wilderland from the endpapers of The Hobbit

More BMPs have been made, but I had forgotten how fat those things are. I was reminded when my 127 MB shuttle-disk filled up. 🫢

I'm gonna need a bigger disk.

I have managed to find an OS/2 Warp 3 screen resolution that works: 1280x960x24 (16M) on S3 ViRGE DX/GX emulation. The same drivers (Scitech 3-1-8 with the freeware rego) will work for OS/2 Warp 4, so that's settled.

Bigger shuttle disk (250 MB) made and loaded. May still not be enough.

After messing around a bit, I realised I had the perfect wallpaper for OS/2.

OS/2 3 Desktop at 1280x960x24. The wallpaper is a ruined theatre somewhere that uses Cyrillic. There are windows all around (that would have been hidden behind curtains), and a stage with a grand piano framed by tattered curtains. The wooden floor is partially torn up and the paint is peeling on the concrete roof.
