The Fediverse is far more than just Mastodon, there are also lots of other types of server on here. Many of the accounts you follow and interact with on Mastodon may not actually be on Mastodon themselves!

Here's a list of some popular Fediverse server types, click on a type's name to find out more about it:

For example @meshe is a video account on a PeerTube server, @Iancylkowski is a photo account on a Pixelfed server.

@FediTips Do you know of any server types being built for group communication? Similar to Facebook groups or Telegram groups. I don't think any good alternatives exist yet. Friendica and Hubzilla have some kind of group functionality, but they're difficult to use (for some) and don't have any mobile apps (afaik).

@ahaldorsen

If you want a simple group system which echoes what people post to it, try FediGroups, more info at https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on-the-fediverse/

If you want an instant messenger that has a Fediverse-like structure I'd recommend XMPP/Jabber. More info at https://joinjabber.org

There's nothing exactly like Facebook groups right now. Mastodon has something similar in development but it seems to be on the back burner for the moment.

@FediTips
I don't know about other Mastodon clients or the default web interface, but at least Fedilab shows the "type" of the server the account is on on the profile view.

@shadowdancer

Yeah, some interfaces and apps indicate the server type, but most don't.

Whatever people use, they can check the server type by looking at the account's "original page" (https://fedi.tips/what-are-original-pages-in-mastodon/).
