The ICO has finalised its guidance on "Consent or pay".
Unsurprisingly, given its pro-business stance, and its previous commentary, the ICO opines that this model can be consistent with data protection law.
I wonder where this will lead.

@neil Not surprised, but very definitely offended by their guidance.
@neil yeah, i no longer can read Guardian articles on how tracking is bad, because when i block ads their site doesn’t show content! I used to pay for Guardian, didn’t stop them from tracking or shoving algorithmic rubbish in my face! Meh! Their loss!
@neil I doubt realistically much will change as those who care for cookie consent would've bounced regardless and those who don't accept them blindly anyways. It's a shame no action (from what I can tell) has been taken to past offenders and that it kinda feels you can "get away" with not taking data protection (cookie) laws seriously.

I was pondering starting some sort of wall of shame for the consent or pay extortion but I doubt the companies involved have any shame.
@neil Personally, it's led to me avoiding sites that carry out that practice.
