I got a good idea from PA0PHH that you can use cheap Ethernet transformers for RF mixer transformers. Man, they are cheap. I ordered 10 for €8.25 from Aliexpress. Each one has two sets, so one will do a whole mixer. Cheaper than toroids and no faffing with trifilar windings! I will give it a try when they get here. #HamRadio #AmateurRadio

@relistan

Ingenious, thanks!

I note that Element14 has an even cheaper option, albeit with a minimum order of 50.

@9v1rt Great! The one you are looking at seems to be a single transformer. The ones I ordered come in an IC case with 24 pins, containing two complete transformers. On Aliexpress, these 16 pin ones are even cheaper, but would take longer to get here. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003010061005.html

@relistan @9v1rt Might also try using them for low-power impedance matching functions. Just need to wire up the dots correctly — can use them in series and parallel…

The Analog Devices ADALP2000 parts kit comes with Hexapath Ethernet transformers on break out dip boards that making prototyping easy. Surprisingly useful beyond just Ethernet-related applications.
