European Commission

🔞 Platforms have no excuse to continue practices that put children at risk.

We’ve asked Snapchat, YouTube, Apple App Store and Google Play for more information on the measures they have in place to protect minors.

This is the first investigatory step after the adoption of the Guidelines on the Protection of Minors, now also available in all EU languages and in a child- and parent-friendly version.

Shaping Europe’s digital future

Commission takes further action to promote a safe environment for minors

Ensuring a safe online space, where minors can learn, play, and socialise safely, is a priority for the European Union.

@EUCommission

This is all about control, you want to take away privacy for millions of EU citizens, for a solution that is not going to work. There has been child abuse long before the internet, and the real criminals will just use a different app that does not comply with your mandatory spyware.

@EUCommission Please require companies to provide tools to parents to gate and monitor their children's access.

However, please do NOT require the companies to verify government identification. This will result in an unauthenticated Internet for everyone, undermining the fundamental human right to privacy (Article 7 of EU Charter of Fundamental Rights).

@EUCommission oh is this a real account from the European commission? seems like a bad joke, !it is not my responsibility to raise other people's children, if they are not able to raise their children, it is not my fault this is literally a dystopian dictatorship. How much have the rich paid to move this forward?

@EUCommission
There's no need to implement an age verification system as the UK did or chat control, which would put sensitive data on risk for millons of EU citizens and residents, mass surveillance it's just a step closer to fascist's governments.
There's an easier solution to protect children against shady webs: DNS blockers, there's even the EU official alternative DNS4EU. I'd say promote and educate parents more to set that up on their children's devices and leave the rest of us be please.

@EUCommission do you think parents are incapable of protecting their own children?

By introducing ill-thought legislations with risks of privacy breaches (like the recent Discord one that already happened!) you're making it harder for children to be protected while compromising on their (and everybody else's) right to privacy.

As if it were not enough to have to protect against addiction, bad influence, and predators, parents now have to protect children against EU legislation as well.

@EUCommission I know of a government that assaults kids, abducts them and even kills them on a regular basis. I also know that they do that with your support. Also, your neoliberal policies have in many cases undermined the social welfare of children in EU countries. We all know you don't give a flying fuck about children anywhere, so please cut the bs right away and say you want to surveil your citizens to create police states. Be honest once.

@EUCommission This is a democratic anti-pattern.

If you want to protect children, protect everyone. That is easier to enforce and does not require mass surveillance. The platforms are putting everyone at risk, not just the children. Promote non-profit social media.

@EUCommission

As long as age verification needs people to upload personal data to random services, were this data can be stolen: this is madness.

A system were a verification tequest is sent to an officual government page, that just answers this with "verified" would be something i am slightly ok with for some.

But as a mother of 2 Teens i do not see how this protects shit.
Parents need to watch their children and teach them properly.
Corporate greed harms the children.

@EUCommission and then you have ideas of mass surveillance, like chat control? After the crazy idea, I'm not sure that anyone believes you, that your interests is actually protecting children. There is software for parents to limit, what children can do. Support European providers, that offer such things. Small children should not use Snapchat, the Apple store or Google play at all and for YouTube just a limited subset of videos.

Parents should parent their children and not let any government or social media giant do it.

You're trying to impose on others the kind of guardianship that MUST be on (caring) parents.

This is wrong at any level, and just an excuse to further increase surveillance.

Last but not least, the tech bros will be very pleased to "be forced" to collect even more data on everyone.
