I just want to give shouts out to LeCarre.
I mean, Graham Greene first began to explore this territory, but it was LeCarre who colonized it.
I'm watching "The Americans", and there's "Homeland", and "The Spy", and we're all breathlessly awaiting the next season of "Slow Horses" -- I've read all the books so far -- and all of this comes down to LeCarre's insistence that it wasn't good vs evil, or tech, or tradecraft, or geopolitics, that spy stories were ever and always about relationships.
