True, but ... most of their other business areas have peaked, were loss leaders or market control gambits, or just never became profitable. The "AI" con is the only thing keeping their valuations inflated.

The only thing keeping DataFarmers growing has been The Cloud (TM), and that's peaked too, due to concerns about monopolisation, digital sovereignty, and so on. So about the only thing keeping their "cloud" businesses growing, and keeping hopes of future profits alive, is MOLE Training.
I'm going to check my KiwiSaver is set the lowest risk possible until the bubble bursts, and then do the opposite.

In the sense that the on-paper value of publicly-traded companies is "printed" by speculation on their future desirability of their stock, yes.

Exactly. The companies telling the most convincing stories at any given time are usually the most valuable on the stock market. The metaverse was one such story, "AI" is another.

its more using the stories to justify an evaluation and then printing money into existance via loans to keep everyone payrolled.
its all of us who pay via inflation.
in order to print all that money, one has to formally follow a proceas and story that holds in court.
AI companies want money. banks want to give loans (=printing money), they all win, we lose, but formally the given loan needs to look legit
@serapath I broadly agree with this. But I think it's worth hammering home the point that share valuations are totally decoupled from whatever money has been fed into the furnace (as with crypto prices).
The price of a share reflects demand, *not* actual value. Which is why share prices can rise and fall on the back of stories, be they investment announcements, or scandals being reported by news media and amplified by social media.
i dont believe in demand. i think its mostly capitalists printing money and speculating.
you have an extreme example of this in MSTR, but NVDA and others are the same.
Its a financial casino, but capitalists, those with access to the money printer, decide whats going to happen, because they just print more money. they just lend new money into existance to do whatever they want and global debt continues to expand, private and public... nothing to do with us, we just feel consequences
