Alice McFlurry :bc:
@Alice@beige.party  ·  activity timestamp 2 weeks ago

I was talking to my husband about how I’m autistic, but I’m not the kind that's really rigid about schedules because I can be really spontaneous on weekends when we're out and about and just going with the flow to the next thing that sounds fun and he was like "Yeah, but what about weekday Alice?"

Weekday Alice:

6am: Wake up and go to the gym and use the elliptical for two episodes of I Think You Should Leave

7am: Shower and get dressed and try to catch up on whatever happened on the Internet while I was sleeping

8am: Start work and have a coffee and a breakfast bar

10am: Snack time! Greek yogurt with a tiny spoon.

12pm: Lunch time! Usually leftovers from dinner from the night before or a can of soup which is low-key my favorite so don’t make fun of me.

2pm: Snack time #2! Cucumber slices with balsamic vinegar or soy sauce if I want something salty

5pm: End work and make dinner

6pm: Dessert time! Usually a frozen treat like a Drumstick ice cream cone or an ice cream sandwich

7pm: Drink a can of Recess to wind down for the night

9pm: Get in bed and doomscroll until I fall asleep

I repeat this every M–F and the only deviation is on Fridays because that's pizza night so most Fridays we'll just get a sad frozen pizza but the last Friday of the month we have SPECIAL pizza which really just means a pizza from whatever local place we feel like but at least it's not another sad frozen pizza.

@Alice
I once read an OCD memoir titled "Just Checking." A friend who was staying with us read it because it was lying around, and asked me why I had it. I said I was curious and it resonated with me—I'm fine but sort of OCD-adjacent. She said, well but you don't have, like, RITUALS. I started describing taking a shower, only I wasn't looking at her, and when I looked up I saw the "Oh god I'm talking to a crazy person" look on her face and kind of ran down.

@stevegis_ssg Ohhhhh wow. Thanks for reminding me!

I feel like a fool for just saying "7pm: Shower" because I just realized it has its own system.

In general:
(1) Shampoo
(2) Conditioner
(3) Face wash
(4) Body wash

But also...

MWFSa: Shave legs
M: Clarifying shampoo
T: Exfoliating body wash
Th: Exfoliating face wash
F: Deep condition

There's absolutely no reason frozen pizza has to be sad. A 10 minute sauté of mushrooms and onions will gormet-up any frozen pizza. Or when my wife's vegetarian sisters comes over for karaoke I get a couple of garlic bulbs roasting in the oven and then put that over the mushroom/truffle oil frozen pizza from Costco for a soak-up-the-booze midnight snack. Super easy, everyone loves it. 👍

@Alice I’m rigid about my routine but I hate schedules.
Example: do not make me do anything until I’ve finished my second cup of coffee, which is at a different time each day (usually anywhere from 7:15-7:45).
Working at jobs where I had to be there at a specific time was awful. Now I get to work anywhere from 8-9 and it’s fine.

@Alice

I like routines, variously, from my own autistic perspective.

I also rise at 6am every day and immediately have a cup of pour over coffee, take meds and do internet things until 8am, at which point I have a second cup of coffee and then exercise on an exercise bike for 34 minutes. I do not exercise at the weekend, as I like to have a break, albeit I am thinking of changing this.

I shan't share the remainder of my day, but I go to sleep at the same time each night.

Thanks for sharing your daily routine, which I found interesting.

@Shivviness Oh yeah good call about the weekday workouts. I only workout on weekdays and leave my weekends up to doing whatever I want, but I also don’t drive so I pretty much walk everywhere which means at least I’m doing...something.

@Iamsaltytrash Pretty much! The only time I go near the middle spoon is when the tiny spoons are in the dishwasher or I’m eating a spoonable item that has big chunks where they'd otherwise fall off the tiny spoon (think like wonton soup though I honestly can't remember the last time I had anything like that).

@Iamsaltytrash I love a good spork! I've been a fan since Taco Bell in the '80s/'90s. And now I suddenly want a little cup of pintos and cheese.

I'm pretty much a sucker for any combo product. My air fryer is also a slow cooker and pressure cooker and steamer and other things. I used to have a microwave that had a toaster built in as well as a DVD/VHS player combo (not part of the microwave). Now I’m just waiting for a Blu-ray VHS player combo.

@blogdiva @Iamsaltytrash It's always so embarrassing when someone asks a brand and you got them from Amazon which is already shameful and then you have to be like "looks like the brand is called KWRZJZY"

But I have them and can at least vouch for them so I figure I'll link to them.

At the same time, it appears that they're called "espresso spoons" so I imagine you can find a lot of versions of slightly more respectable origin.

6:55am Poop some more.

7:30am meditate

8:30am a little more pooping.

8:45am breakfast

9am hoping this is the last of the poop.

9:15am read the Fedi

9:20am Damn it. MORE?!?!

The rest of my day goes pretty much like that but switch "pooping" for "gotta pee" and that's more or less it.

@Alice The nature of my work disallows for routine as far as what I do and where I go after I leave the house, but the nature of my ADHD means I have solid habits I worked hard to chisel in stone - what’s for breakfast, coffee, where my stuff gets put when it’s not in my pockets, etc. I don’t have the kind of eating habits you do with regard to our other meals. Home cooked or carry-out largely depends on how Jen is feeling and/or when I get home from assignments. What’s wild is that sometimes, more often that one would guess, Jen will look at me and say “that’s a great idea,” even though I haven’t said anything. About 75% of the time, I know exactly what she means, so I’ll either make the pizza order or call in the Thai order. It’s a freaky psychic link we have that’s real.

@wendynather @Alice I came to ask this same question. This sounds a lot like me, diagnosed autistic, but strongly suspect AuDHD. I need structure, otherwise my head is spinning around from one thing to the next. even then, easily distracted. but give me a nice juicy problem to fiz and you can’t pull me away from it even with eagle talons.

@wendynather This is a really good question!

I definitely get annoyed, but not like tantrum annoyed.

I’m also okay if I have advance notice about a deviation, like a doctors appointment or a meeting scheduled by a coworker, as long as it was scheduled at least the day before.

But there's a special place in hell for anyone who tries to throw a same-day meeting on my calendar.

That will typically lead to me messaging them in Teams to ask about the meeting so I can address all of their questions there and then I’m like "Okay, well it looks like we covered everything so there's no longer a reason to meet."

6h45: grumble and stop the alarm on my watch
7h00: wake up in panic (why didn't the alarms wake me up?)
7h-8h (in no particular order): prepare the kids for school, eat breakfast, take a shower (if lucky enough that kids don't need the bathroom), feed the cats, clean after the cat because of course he shat on the rug again, make coffee (if lucky enough that one of the coffee machines is available)
8h-12h: Work
10h: Coffee/toilet break
12h: Cook some shit from scratch because of course there weren't enough leftovers for me. Eat cooked shit.
13h-17h: Work
15h: Toilet break
17h: Round trip to the grocery store to buy shit to cook a dinner that will not leave enough leftovers for me
18h: Cooking chaos that hopefully ends in something edible (not every time)
19h: Dinner with the family
20h-22h (in no particular order): Time with one or more kid and/or time with my wife and/or time alone and/or doing dishes because of course the kids had homeworks
22h: Sleep!

Party: all day

Party: all night

Jks. If I don't sometimes follow the same general routines I feel like there are bees in me. But, then sometimes I am chaos incarnate. And I never know which version of me it'll be. Which reinforces some of my inflexibilities. Which in turn reinforces my chaotic nature. Which have both grown exponentially into distinct personalities which I'm unable to control, so have developed a third personality to mediate. But that guy is extremely unreliable. And so the constant war with self that they're all at, gets pushed into the background by a secret fourth guy who's just a dreamer - a wonderer. So I need a fifth guy to keep *him* in check, which is when guy #1 takes over and starts messing things up.
