We've reached the first tipping point (99% probability even if we'd manage to keep the 1.5 degree target) This means coral reefs on any meaningful scale will be lost. Nearly a billion people and a quarter of all marine life depend on them.

https://www.leeds.ac.uk/news/article/5861/new-reality-as-world-reaches-first-climate-tipping-point & https://global-tipping-points.org

To roughly quote Maja Göpel: People don't seem to grasp the irreversibility of such changes in ecological systems.

@bastianallgeier > a billion people depend on them

What does this even mean? Are they going to die, and at what timescale? Or what is the observable effect if the hypothesis is right?

@bastianallgeier And it seems as though none of those responsible are in any way interested. It doesn't look good. For us humans…

"People don't seem to grasp the irreversibility of such changes in ecological systems."
Because nobody is telling them about the magnitude and the speed this will happen, rather say is happening already. #extremweather #hotOceans #dyingCoralReefs #DyingKrill

It's ALWAYS downplayed by politicians and media.
Scientists are warning since decades. But deciders are going on with biz as usual. The multisystemchanges(!) urgently needed globally are nowhere to see.

Scene from a terminator movie. John Connor as a teen is asking:
"We're not gonna make, are we? People i mean."

We need to mourn this. 25% of all marine life!
The ongoing tragedies keep piling up.

For context, all the world's ongoing conflicts and populations suffering as a result, amount to just one: homo sapien.

Good that we haven't learnt to communicate with them. We would not be able to handle the guilt or the articulation of unfolding horror and pain. On second thought, maybe we would. Already desensitized so much to suffering (Gaza) that, apathy will prevail.

Typing this feels like silent screaming!

@bastianallgeier I really don’t think people grasp (or care to ponder) that extinctions are final. It starts with the corals and the vertebrates that rely on the ecology of the reefs but it will progress rapidly. Maybe richer humans can shelter on the extreme heat days that will come but, with each unbearably ‘hottest ever day’ that comes along there will be less wild life when humans venture back out. Our descendants will live in a far quieter duller world.

@bastianallgeier And here we are debating whether we want our ecocide with or without white christian nationalism, not whether or not we want ecocide.

@bastianallgeier this stuff is utterly depressing and I have to keep holding out hope there's some sort of technology that can reverse warming and even do a bit of cooling that'll have to be used as a last chance.

@bastianallgeier I try to stay optimistic. But there’s still literal *coal power plants* in my city, along with millions of oil guzzling cars, and millions of gas-powered Haus heating units. People don’t get the scale of change needed.
