I've posted a few times in the last year or two suggesting sodium ion batteries as an alternative to lithium ion. Cheaper, safer, longer-lived, and easier to manufacture, and to recyclable at EoL. Mainly for fixed installations at this point (eg storage for rooftop solar), because the tech is new and still somewhat bulky.
I recently visited the friends who introduced me to them, as storage in their off-grid systems. They can't praise them enough.

@strypey Do you know if any solar providers in Aotearoa are selling sodium ion batteries yet? My whānau are looking at solar, maybe plus battery. But so far it has only been lithium ion that is quoted for.
But even automakers are taking an interest. The first EVs using sodium ion batteries were delivered to customers a couple of years back. Now the race is on to figure out how to improve the energy-to-weight ratio of sodium-based EVs. ;

This opens up the possibility of manufacturing replacement batteries and even whole EVs closer to the point of use.
