If anybody wonders my take on this stuff: I use basically every bit of new tech at home — it’s like Cyberpunk 2077 in my house, there’s drones, VR headsets etc. Why? I don’t want to be ignorant, and it’s not possible to secure what you don’t understand.

However - I don’t use AI at work. At all, I even refused Copilot. Why? I believe it’s a career advantage to not use those tools. I want to know what I am talking about. I don’t want to rely on Copilot either, because not every org will have it.

@GossiTheDog Like most things in big tech, it's about encouraging dependency. Most of the time that dependency is marketed towards businesses (AWS, Azure, GitHub, Atlassian products, etc.) but now it's being marketed at developers themselves. Avoiding dependency on mutable tech that can be pulled from under you is paramount. Nobody can pull software that runs on a computer you own, but a cloud service? Whenever the provider wants!

It’s approaching five years since I left Microsoft and since then I’ve just over doubled my salary - and my career has basically been based upon being the one person in the room to say ‘…have you thought about XYZ?’

My continued career plan is essentially to double down on that, because I think there’s going to be a lot of orgs making dumb decisions based on offloading cognitive tasks to dumb and bias AI.
