I think we could be doing a lot for the future of the fediverse right now by encouraging people to use tools for cross-posting:

scores of academics made accounts here in 2023 but moved on to Bluesky; showing them how easy it is to maintain some presence here could be really impactful

bridging isn’t the only option, and for some people, cross posting might be more appropriate

@UlrikeHahn I’ve been cross-posting for some time now, but tbh I get so little engagement here that it hardly seems worth the effort. I’m holding out for a good Bluesky social app (Phoenix?) that can cross-post to Mastodon, but if there isn’t one soon then I’ll probably switch to bridging only.

@keithwilson I’m definitely not trying to recommend cross posting as useful for everyone. In fact, the kinds of accounts I think it’s most useful for are ones that are already basically in “broadcast mode” (because they are large).

I know some people won’t interact with bridged accounts or don’t like bridging, or aren’t on Bluesky, so it’s an additional alternative.

@UlrikeHahn Yes, for larger accounts that would make sense. Otherwise I’m not convinced that cross-posting is any better than bridging—and in some ways it’s worse because it splits interactions across both platforms.

@keithwilson I think they both have their place: for example, where content might vary in how appropriate it is for each platform

@UlrikeHahn That’s fair. Not everything needs to be cross-posted. But that makes it more difficult to use an automated solution rather than something like Buffer where you can choose which SM platforms you want to post to. (I’m currently using a home-rolled iOS shortcut which somewhat automates the process, but is still slightly tedious.)

@UlrikeHahn #TBH what's missing is an altnernative to #HootSuite, which is designed to enable multi-channel, multi-platform social media managment.

@mastodonmigration @ElenLeFoll collecting suggestions here would be great: fedica.com has a free plan that allows you to post to mastodon, bluesky, and LinkedIn and more… it’s likely that there are better options, so all suggestions welcome

@UlrikeHahn @ElenLeFoll

Perhaps it would be good to recommend a tool that is easy to use for cross posting. Is there a good one?

@ElenLeFoll I’m imagining this in the category of “small steps things each one of us can do now”….

@ElenLeFoll was actually thinking more about the other direction: encouraging people we know who are active on other platforms to cross post to here…
