馃嚜馃嚭Your browser's #DoNotTrack signal is now legally binding: As of today, enabling DNT means no more personalized political ads (and no nagging consent banners about it). Keep an eye on Meta & Co. Are they complying? Report any violations! https://www.patrick-breyer.de/en/political-advertising-eu-fights-cookie-banners-but-not-voter-manipulation-and-microtargeting/ #PoliticalAds

@echo_pbreyer Just recently, Firefox removed Do Not Track in favour of Global Privacy Control, which seeks to communicate disagreement with data resale, but not collection. Is the law general enough to apply to mechanisms other than Do Not Track, and would a Global Privacy Control signal also prohibit data collection and not just resale?

@echo_pbreyer Does DNT also mean objecting to "legitimate interests" or only the regular lack of consent?

@elgregor Its legal meaning hasn't been clarified by DPAs or courts.

@echo_pbreyer this is somewhat surprising (albeit welcome) to hear given tech industry never really taking up DNT en masse.

I thought it was kinda dead in the water in terms of industry support.

@echo_pbreyer Article 21(5) GDPR has this for all tracking and targeting, not just for political ads, since 2016. Enforcement is lacking, plus obligations for browser manufacturers.
