#Mastodon feature request: you know how you can opt in to a confirmation dialog before you boost a post or you publish media without #AltText?
I think it would be WONDERFUL if there could be a prompt to ask: "are you sure you want to boost this?" when you're about to boost a post that has a picture without #AltText...
Because the "Explore" page makes me a little bit angry when I see EVERY SINGLE DAY the same accounts posting screenshots that do not contain any alt text descriptions. Not cool 😒
@_elena Respectfully, but why are we shaming users over alt text when tools exist to create alt text?
It's akin to shaming consumers to recycle while Coca cola cranks out plastic.
Alt text can be super challenging for folks, especially text-heavy & visually complex or abstract images.
I'm vehemently against AI Slop machines, but AI accessibility tools exist and could & should be baked into the Fediverse.
It'll be far more effective than alt text policing & shaming.
@renwillis with all due respect, if you read carefully my original toot and the additional comments in the replies, you’d see that I was not shaming regular people for not using alt text.
I was addressing popular Fediverse accounts that routinely post screenshots without any alt text.
One in particular ONLY posts screenshots of his posts from other social media platforms without alt text. He has almost 300,000 followers and never replies to anyone. That’s terrible etiquette IMHO
@_elena I agree you, specifically, aren't alt text shaming, but it is rife on the platform
My issue is that we keep expecting users to fix the issue when there are already tools to help.
I don't think pop ups or discouraging information sharing boosts because a user didn't include alt text is a viable solution.
We have the capabilities to automatically generate alt text, let's use them @Gargron <3
@_elena i keep hoping they add plugin support so folks can build their own little features like this. a great way to test new ideas.
