I may have just broken the minds of ActivityPub developers at #FediForum, but the question I posed was "what happens if we do this differently? What other ways of building the Fediverse are there? Why are we building monolithic applications?"

The first half of the session was very much so an off-the-cuff talk, but I'll try to prepare both a blog post and a video recording of what I went through in the session.

@thisismissem Hi again, great to see somone else stepping out of the status quo. It would be good if we could communicate (not immediately but in the near future) about protocols, data models, architectures, and databases.
May I suggest a database engine that I am looking to use for my project https://arangodb.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ArangoDB. Do check the license as its compound and does not allow to use as a commercial second party database provider for third parties.

@AaronNGray yeah, I'm not tied to the database in what I'm hacking on, it's literally just "whatever gets there quickest" — I'm not inclined to use a non-opensource database.

@thisismissem its open source just with propriatory restriction to retain rights as a pure database provider to third parties.

@thisismissem There is a TypeScript Node.js ArangoDB Client https://github.com/arangodb/node-arangodb also a C++ one which is what I am intending to use for server side as well as TypeScript.

@simonjust that's 100% correct, and there's a phrase in the ATmosphere (AT Protocol community) that is: "We can just do things"

And I want to enable that for ActivityPub

I'd imagine some kind of Fediverse wide brainstorming session in which people try to come up with ideas that could be fun to build.. Like cool integrations and perhaps something that is very different from social media apps (that we know and love, but we got plenty 😂 ) .

@thisismissem these kinds of questions are never popular, especially when there's a lot of work done already. Sometimes they have merit, sometimes they don't - it depends. All I personally learnt from being in such situations is that when you're just questioning the status quo without a plan in mind, it's harder to get people to look outside the box.
