@benpate there's similar being developed for AT Protocol, so I don't see why it wouldn't necessarily work on ActivityPub, though personally I'd probably not use it, my risk profile to sharing my location has become radically different since the time when I used foursquare/swarm.

@thisismissem @benpate

I read this differently, not so much that the focus would be on sharing your exact location at a set time necessarily, but like, an open, local mapping initiative that would federate a 3-d community’s shared catalogue of “where to meet up and hang out”.

@benpate did I read that wrong?

Also, related but not Federated, look up CyclingGuide.app. It’s a bikes-first route mapping localizer that, IIRC is built over OpenStreetMaps.

Yeah, I’m still thinking through all of the possible use cases. So, we can still define what’s good and what’s bad.

I wasn’t thinking of “I am here” so much as “this thing did/is/will happen at this location.”

Personally, I’d love to post annotations on the billboards on rural I70, or tell my neighborhood about street festival.

But privacy, spam, etc are all issues to still improve.

@benpate @thisismissem

Was it XKCD or The Oatmeal that once put out a comic that was nothing but a date, time, and geocoordinates, prompting a gathering two years later or something of people who saw the comic and just showed up?

Maybe there could just be a HereBot that did that, and 15 random fediversians could just turn up at a rock outcropping in Bancroft during the 2029 Gemboree days. Or a random abandoned ball diamond in June 2027 but have a pizza Ubered there too.

@jandi @johannab @benpate sounds similar to the first Summer In The City meetup for YouTube that I went to in London. Flashmob

@benpate @thisismissem we need a mappable, crowd-sourced but curated guidebook to what is out there.

Am I just imagining a federated yelp???!? Ugh, I’m thinking of more than that, like online ratings but posted with a verifiable connection to a public space. The “space” might have an account, and to be able to post to it you’d have to have some sort of substantiated engagement.

I asked people about a Federated review system a while ago. The response was mixed, but there were many negatives and potential gotchas to route around.

As for the space being its own actor, I'm leaning toward using the search engine from Bandwagon that turns each *search query* into an actor, so you could follow a regional query if you want.. like "all places in Denver tagged as a music festival"

I think it accomplishes the same goal, with more flexibility. Yes? No?

https://www.gatherwr.ca/ is the “AI Agent” this startup has pitched to our community foundation. It’s awful. It’s just a chatbot with that chippy, fawning mannerism running in front of google’s increasingly bad search.

I sent in feedback, then elaborated on it more when invited to by the CEO of the community foundation, and I tried to explain to him that putting a dopamine-hijacking search bot up can’t find 3rd spaces that aren’t in the data

@benpate @johannab yeah, there's plenty of interesting things that can be done with geo data depending on your risk profile.
