Mondrian. Broadway Boogie Woogie, 1942-3.

When I was a kid in a wishywashy Southern salt marsh, a copy of this painting was available to borrow from the island library, which I did. It changed my life. Even then I understood it, even without knowing that it was made during a World War.

People often don't notice that he dispensed with black lines here and went with yellow. I've often thought it was about headlights at night, but now verging a world at war I have other thoughts.

#Painting

A strictly rectilinear De Stijl painting made of yellow white red blue and gray rectangles. The title lends an interpretation of busy and glittering city streets.
