#WritersCoffeeClub Have you ever included real-world disproven science in a work?

For sure!

I write SF/F and try to make the ideas crunchy. So I probably have written stuff that relied on subsequently-disproven science, *or* used the disproven stuff anyway because I like to play what-if games with the implications of ideas: "yes, but WHAT IF phlogiston theory was true? What would be the implications for stochiometry? Or steam engines and heavier-than-air flight?"

@cstross Well phlogiston would obviously have to have negative mass so heavier than air flight would be uneconomic compared to phlogiston filled dirigibles.

@cstross For my part, I'm pretty sure that if FTL works at all, it won't be a jump drive. And Dyson spheres, while a fun idea, are out of the question too.

@Verain Dyson's original idea was a cloud of habitats, solar powered, in a variety of non-intersecting orbits at different inclinations to trap all available solar radiation. An actual hard "shell" around a star is indeed pretty obvious nonsense.

@cstross That's true, but it's nonsense I enjoy. :)

@cstross

One example is David Weber and the Honorverse series.

Light moves at light speed but gravity waves move at infinite speed. Makes for more interesting in universe story telling 🙂🤷‍♂️
