How much is the motherhood penalty?

Well, after having their first child, working women lose on average £65k over the next five years (the average reduction being just over 40%).

It'll be no surprise that while subsequent children produce a lower level of loss, the cumulative total grows after each child.

So, I wonder whether that has anything to do with the declining British rate and suggests that mothers are continuing to carry the cost(s) of reproduction.
