#ZFS PSA: you do not need 32GB of RAM to use ZFS. i don't know where this comes from, but i've seen people claim this in at least two separate places recently.

i've used ZFS on systems as small as 1GB with no problems. that doesn't mean you *have* to use ZFS on small systems, but if you want to, don't be put off by inaccurate claims about memory requirements.

@lw My rules are:

< 1 GB - only if you don't mind a buttload of tweaking.
1 GB - doable for light loads.
>= 4 GB - if you expect to run a GUI with any semblance of responsiveness.

My current laptop only has 4(and is 12 years old), and it runs Firefox based browsers over ZFS without issue.

It cannot run chromium based browsers without a lot of hiccupy page faults. But that is more chromium's bloated fault.

@lw I've used ZFS with 512MB ram. You'll lose some advantages (ARC cache will always be extremely small) but it works.
