Just got back from the Bound for Glory concert, the first one in five and a half years. BFG, which started in 1967 and has been broadcast weekly ever since then on local radio, is the longest continuously running folk music show in the country, if not the world. For most of that time it featured live performers and a live audience, but since the beginning of the pandemic, it has just been playing recordings of past concerts. Now it's back live (and free to attend, as before).

Wonderful as it is to see the series revive, I was left with mixed feelings about the form itself. I have been a devoted fan of folk music since I was a teenager, but a concert like the one that I just attended brought home the fact that my idea of "folk music" differs from that of the usual BFG audience. To me, folk music is music that originated from the folk. For many of them, folk music is music written by singers of folk music, much of which (to my ear) borders on the insipid.
