Got two #FolkwaysRecords releases today at Vintage Vinyl, a new record shop in downtown #Sarasota. They also had a very cool Leadbelly 10” that I decided to leave behind.

I always thought Folkways was a project of the #Smithsonian but it only became that when the original owner of the label, Moses Asch, died in 1986. I wonder why I’ve heard more about John & Allan Lomax and Harry Smith than him? It really was genius to think to record all of these different types of #FolkMusic in their original settings so that we can have that window into the past for posterity. #Leadbelly #vinyl

The Maxwell Quartet’s recent albums include exceptional performances of classical strings quartets, and traditional Scottish folk music — which they previously played as encores. I greatly enjoy the combination.

coming across her (excellent) name in a benefit concert from 1935 in an article in the Brooklyn Eagle reminded me about Kitty Okryenetz (1925-2006), a small-time Yiddish singer & entertainer whose 1953 album I was charmed by years ago. (free account required to stream the album.)

BFG, which started in 1967 and has been broadcast weekly ever since then on local radio, is the longest continuously running folk music show in the country, if not the world. For most of that time it featured live performers and a live audience, but since the beginning of the pandemic, it has just been playing recordings of past concerts. Now it's back live (and free to attend, as before).

French-Algerian guitarist Pierre Bensusan is playing in my home town, in the church I grew up in.

The church’s sanctuary is a half-round space (a lot like the Ryman Auditorium, actually) and a few years ago was retrofitted to serve as a performance space in addition to Sunday services.

I gave up religion a long time ago but I’ll definitely be attending this particular “service”.
