Last night, the best experience in this festival was watching (and discovering) this Ethiopian band, using their traditional instruments, but the sounds and the performances were very much like rock music, complete with the head bob (is that what it's called?) and a person with long hair throwing their head back and forth so the hair whips in the air to the rhythm. Will be looking up their music but so far all I get is this clip.

Gordon Lightfoot: Canada's Storyteller in Song 🍁
Gordon Lightfoot, a Canadian folk singer-songwriter, has captured the essence of Canada in his music for decades. From 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' to 'Sundown,' his songs tell stories of history, love, and the Canadian landscape. A true legend eh? 🇨🇦 #Canada #GordonLightfoot #CanadianMusic #FolkMusic

I've been learning oud lately as a way to make it easier to memorize Arabic poetry. To keep things simple, I am doing Egyptian tuning and keeping to Arabic maqams vs Turkish or Persian or the many many Central Asian maqamat styles.
The thing that struck me is how as a woman, I need a specially commissioned oud because all the commercial ouds are designed for male bodies and hands.
Any other musicians have this or a similar issue?

Made my very first purchases on #Bandcamp today! I purchased a compilation by @ionafyfe - a supremely talented traditional #folk singer from #Scotland (who I discovered on Mastodon first) - please check it out and consider going for some great #music! Her Scots language version of "In The Bleak Midwinter" is already a favorite for the season!

Sad to hear that Adam McNaughtan has died - singer, songwriter, founder-member of Glasgow Uni Folk Club, English teacher and organiser of famed Rutherglen Academy ballad club.
His Jeely Piece Song was a frequent fixture of my childhood, as I assume it was for every other Scottish wean of the past six decades. I never met him, but from how I've heard his friends speak I know he was a fond friend and treasured presence - and an absolute folk legend!

"Four In May" is a song of grief, resilience, and hope.
Meant to be sung in community, I wrote this song several years ago for transgender day of remembrance.
Sing along or listen alone, it's free to download or stream as often as you like.

Today in Labor History November 19, 1915: Joe Hill, IWW organizer and song writer was executed by a Utah firing squad after being convicted of murder on trumped-up charges. His final message from prison was “Don’t mourn, Organize!” His ashes were supposedly sprinkled in every state of the union, except Utah, because he had said, "I don't want to be found dead in Utah." They were also sprinkled in Canada, Sweden, Australia and Canada. Some of his most famous songs were “The Preacher and the Slave,” “The Rebel Girl,” “There is Power in a Union,” “Casey Jones, the Union Scab,” and “Mr. Block.” In 1988, an envelope containing his remaining ashes was discovered. Abbie Hoffman suggested that folksinger Billy Bragg should consume them and he supposedly did, washed down, of course, with copious union beer.

Got two #FolkwaysRecords releases today at Vintage Vinyl, a new record shop in downtown #Sarasota. They also had a very cool Leadbelly 10” that I decided to leave behind.
I always thought Folkways was a project of the #Smithsonian but it only became that when the original owner of the label, Moses Asch, died in 1986. I wonder why I’ve heard more about John & Allan Lomax and Harry Smith than him? It really was genius to think to record all of these different types of #FolkMusic in their original settings so that we can have that window into the past for posterity. #Leadbelly #vinyl
Hmm, never heard these verses from Pete Seeger before.
This land is your land, but it once was my land,
Until we sold you Manhattan Island.
You pushed our Nations to the reservations;
This land was stole by you from me.
Maybe you've been working as hard as you're able,
But you've just got crumbs from the rich man's table,
And maybe you're thinking, was it truth or fable,
That this land was made for you and me.
Woodland and grassland and river shoreline,
To everything living, even little microbes,
Fin, fur, and feather, we're all here together,
This land was made for you and me.
