I see so many people (mostly men, this isn't random) talking about how Meta's Ray-Ban glasses are "incredible" or "still not ready" yet, I don't see anyone calling it what it is:
Voyeurism.

This technology will increase voyeurism and stalking aggressions in unacceptable ways. These glasses are a voyeur's dream weapon. Also a doxxer's and stalker's dream weapon.

Why are our laws and cultures not protecting us against this?

@Em0nM4stodon personally I find them weird, I don't understand who wants to buy them honesty.
I hope there will be more and more recognition of the privacy issues and that many organisations ban people using them from accessing places.

@Em0nM4stodon you know the solution to this problem is to turn it against ice and the government and DOJ will swoop in to protect their special little children

@Em0nM4stodon This is where we post-menopausal, many lo-o-o-o-ong post-pregnancy women will shine.

Bring it.

To anyone with questions about Meta's Ray-Ban glasses and how this is problematic for privacy and consent, I highly recommend reading this excellent article from Janus Rose at The Verge:

"“One way to think about it is protecting your community and the people you care about,” said Gilliard. “When you’re wearing these glasses, when you use your video doorbell, when you record everyone’s conversations, you’re not just surveilling yourself. And there’s no consistent and foolproof way to guarantee that information won’t be used against people you care about — to hurt trans and queer people, or hurt immigrant communities. I wish people would think about it in those terms instead of ‘did my package get delivered.’”

The Verge

Privacy laws can’t keep up with ‘luxury surveillance’

“It’s not clear to me that a small red light would be sufficient notification in some states for someone to consent to being recorded.”

@Em0nM4stodon seeing someone with those. I would pull out my cellphone and point the camera at the person until they feel uncomfortable. then i would say 'now you know how I feel'

When we purchased a home security system a few years ago, the rep seemed shocked that we didn't want the "free" Ring doorbell. We had to insist. (And in the end, we were offered additional window sensors instead.)

I haven't regretted our decision.

And having seen how our neighbor's camera is used when there are incidents: yeah, it's nice right after an incident to "see" what happened, but TBH I don't think we've gotten actionable info. 🤷🏻

@Em0nM4stodon I will be very interested to see if thin / no frame glasses or contacts will become more desired in response to people being suspicious of chunkier frames. I mean, I hope this gets driven back as unacceptable before it widely impacts fashion trends, but I know I'd be thinking about it if I were in the market for eyewear right now.

By the way, if you spot a pair of Meta's Ray-Ban glasses laying on the floor in a public place and filming up, I'd recommend you wrap it in a towel and report it to the authorities (if it is safe for you to do so): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upskirt
