One of the joys of not being on the bleeding edge and using older, well established software is exemplified by my slow exploration of #emacs. In this case it’s a book which is 11 years old but it is a really well written, clear guide and whilst bits are outdated the fundamentals, which is what I am after, are still relevant.

@simon I wonder how old my second edition actually is. I used to have fun telling the junior programmers that my emacs config file was older than they were. But seriously, I used emacs in the early 80’s at university.

@wndxlori That’s great to hear and it really puts into perspective how long Emacs has been around. It’s got to be good to have kept on going!

@simon and my husband tells me 1996 is the second edition date.

@dimsumthinking No, learn both. I have a good grasp of Vim but it doesn’t feel like a VS Code replacement for me so I thought I’d see what Emacs is like.

But for the foreseeable future I’ll be using VS Code because I’m a lot more productive in it and it might stay that way.
