#YouTube and the #deathcult of “Independent” Media https://hamishcampbell.com/youtube-and-the-deathcult-of-independent-media/ Capitalism cannot tolerate risk, it cannot tolerate diversity, it needs control, predictability, and growth at all costs. And that is the death of any real grassroots media.

we’ve seen this story before, in the 90s, independent radio stations were bought out by Clear Channel, homogenising the airwaves.
No, in that story the stations had to be robbed and cheated, and millions of people fighting to save free radio defeated, to ensure corporate dominance and oligarchy. In this case, you all willingly signed up for the private ClearChannel Radio+ service, and now you're shocked to find that you sold your soul in that deal. Google didn't have to lift a finger to defeat all those "independent" journalists. They defeated themselves by leashing themselves to a giant corporation pretending to be a neutral medium of exchange.

Go figure, when y'all stopped file sharing, and started telling me that streaming is the future because it's so user friendly, now you're all stuck in a corporate death spiral of selling each other out to the highest bidder. Again. What did you expect would happen when you let a giant corporation have dictatorial control, gatekeeping all your content?

(Not you, the "royal you")

@hamishcampbell

Enabled by the capitalist class privilege to print money to protect its/their interests.
As long as we all continue to use money they can print, capitalist class privilege will continue. Class division based on who can and who cannot print money will never stop for as long as we all use their capitalist money 🤷 ....so i highly recommend to think about and consider what can be done on an #OMN context to avoid this problem.

@hamishcampbell

Even if #OMN takes off and starts spreading, there is a real danger the capitalist class will (ab)use its class privilege to print money to systematically fund everything that will enable to undermine #OMN again ...and I think it is just a matter of time for that effort to succeed unless #OMN really finds a way to enable self sustainability that by large immunizes it to such "attacks" ...difficult task, so its super important to start a broad discussion about what can be done

@serapath it's got STRONG social defences for this. Then It's up to the affinity groups who push it through.

@hamishcampbell

hm, does it though? how would it work?
What i worry about is capitalists locating participants of OMN and printing money, to cause inflation all around the participants, e.g.

This could be rent increase or prices in supermarkets to spike and plenty of more ways, all the way up to general inflation, while providing income to obedient/loyal corporate employees and themselves, so they wont feel it much, because price increase ans income increase is the same ...

@hamishcampbell ...but anyone in OMN might not get any of that freshly printed money.

...thats of course the "nuclwar option".
Before that, they can pay people to infiltrate, cause mess, grow alternative fake independent media, attacking tech infrastructure, trying to bribe participants and in general cause a lot of infighting and confusio to keep OMN busy with itself.

Of course, it mainly costs capitalists without any real returns, so its mostly a cost...

@hamishcampbell ...which, given enough people participate because they believe in OMN, will slowly but steadily deplete capitalist resources over time (even if its a long time) ....but if they can print, then they can keep it going forever ...its essentially takong away bjying power from OMN participa ts without their consent and the printing privilege grants them this power
