Will Mamdani's Math Survive Albany?

While conservative economists have cautioned that higher taxes might siphon millionaires away from New York, there is not much evidence that this actually happens. Besides, the Mamdani Commie Shakedown would be more than offset by the massive tax cuts the rich just got thanks to Trump's $4 trillion One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBA) that was passed over the summer. Lesser millionaires will save around $90,000/year, while people earning $80,000/year will get just $1,500—not even enough to cover one month of childcare in this town.

"Given how the economic impacts of the [Trump bill] are so glaringly lopsided in favoring the wealthy, it absolutely helps reinforce the notion that the people who are benefitting the most, who didn't really need or seek the benefits they just got, should be looked to to help offset any negative impact on New York's budget," said James Parrott, a budget expert and senior advisor and senior fellow at the Center for New York City Affairs at the New School. "And it makes sense that they would also be looked to to fund the expansion of social services that Mamdani is talking about, that would help address some of the very economically polarized conditions that we have here in New York City, often thanks to policy coming out of Washington."
