@haitchfive It's part of why #kermit was popular. It was sometimes the only way to get things from one vendor's machine to another vendor's.

Running Linux was difficult; making Modelines in XF86Config - get the wrong and you fry your monitor.

Anyhow, not to say that everything is fantastic with the modern world, but I think there's a reasonable case to be made that it is indeed better.
