I'm looking to purchase my first #NAS. The internet is recommending a Synology DS225+ but I'm also reading that they force you to buy #Synology drives and I'm not sure the lock-in is a positive sign?
So what other brands should I be looking for? I basically want to run my #Jellyfin server on it so the whole family can stream audio and video to our #Android + #iOS devices and listen to some banging tunes on the #Sonos speaker at home.

Sooner or later, these kind of commercial solutions will be knowing enshitification (exclusive use of branded HD is just the beginning).
With #OpenMediaVault or #XigmaNAS you can use whatever hardware you want. Give them a spin in a VM to try!
@matt I use Synology at work and at home and I'm not too happy with them. They offer limited support for anything that isn't considered "compatible" with their hardware - internal and external HDDs. Their software ecosystem has some really great stuff, but any time something doesn't work right, it's near impossible to diagnose in my experience
Unfortunately I don't have any experience with alternatives so I don't have any recommendations to make
@matt I have had 2 different Synology with probably 8 different drives, mostly WD. Didn't even know the company sold drives

I use an Asustor NAS, which is similar to the Synology in concept, but lets you use whatever drives. There’s a native Jellyfin server app for it (no need to muck around with docker, though it can do that, too)
@neverbeaten I've discovered Asustor during my research. I'm both surprised and not surprised that this is ASUS but with some stupid branding. 😆
The products look interesting though. Thanks for the reply and confirmation of Jellyfin compatibility. I'm going to do a little more researching, but it looks like a strong choice so far.
