Samsung has rolled out a software update to its smart fridges that will display ads, despite saying they had "no plans" to do so. We're headed for a future where you will have to pay extra for appliances without ads.

Rockin' a retiree's free garage fridge from 1986 that was meant as a temp answer when ours died 8 years ago. I am not prepared for the future of food storage.
I want to get one with the cameras that look and tell you what to buy and just keep jars of piss and tinfoil swans of meatloaf. If AI can be scarred psychologically, I want to help.

I'm glad I moved to a Sony phone after owning many Samsung's now. I got fed up with them plugging AI to death and following Apples lead to remove SD card slots and earphones sockets.

@evacide Sadly, a Samsung “smart” fridge came with the condo I bought. However, it never got and never will get connected to the net.
I see a future burgeoning business that de-nazifies household appliances.
These features balloon the manufacturing & operating costs of appliances.
Spyware computer chips & display screens aren't free.
They use a ton of electricity, even when you're not at home. Look forward to the double digit rate increases on electricity bills.
The fossil fuel industry is desperately trying new ways to thwart energy efficiency.
More likely, you won't be able to open your fridge without seeing the ads. Screw Samsung. LG's appliances are more highly rated.

I will find the graphics I made quite a few years ago for their "surveillance TVs" that sent your viewing choices to a secret sftp site.

@evacide Not a surprise, really… We have an LG TV with a nice OLED panel, but I had to cut it off the Internet, because it was pinging home every second and displaying shitload of adds and even installing apps on its own…
Now, I have slashed it on dns and firewall, but that makes menus laggy and/or malfunctioning…
Not really a problem, because we use it just as a display, but still - it is the future we will be getting. Next step, you won’t be able not to see the ads…

@evacide My Samsung fridge (came with the house) is of the old "dumb" variety where the buttons are capacitive and press themselves at random several times during the day. Of course it's a Samsung fridge so I should be lucky it even makes the contents cold.
@evacide Websites charge advertisers for displaying ads on their sites: I used to work for a company that was a payment processor for that.
Surely in a litigious country like the US the purchasers can sue for use of their property without their permission!??
