I think a lot about how we get more people like me (Gen Z, female, queer, into sports) on the Social Web.

One of the things I have realised is that the perception of the Social Web to someone like me isn't all that positive. It doesn't have a good 'vibe'.

In this blog post, I've explored the initial vibe of the Social Web to someone like me. I'd love if you checked it out.

What's the Vibe of the Social Web?

The all-important 'vibe' shapes the message others receive when they come into contact with the Open Social Web. Vibe. What a word. What a concept. The idea that every space has its own energy which reflects the experience. It's all very witchy. If you haven't come across the term before,

@saskia you are saying that the initial vibe is not good enough, but also that there are corners where it is. Is it necessary to change the vibe of the whole thing or just steer people into the corners that have the vibe they might like?

@j12t Potentially a bit of both. I think we need to improve the overall vibe whilst also highlighting those corners to the people who are interested in them. Less "Join the Social Web" more "Join this cool community for Marvel fans", for example. The overall still matters because, unless they defederate from everyone, they’ll still come in contact with the rest of the 'world'

Into sports

Newsmast and Surf definitely help w/ finding 'genres' of content but I definitely hope we see some more work in the area of algorithmic feeds, finding sports content isn't particularly easy (especially if you're joining the fediverse w/ no other context of how to find content). I also follow(ed) a bunch of a.gup.pe groups years ago which definitely helped before they shut down.

But you don't really know to do any of that when you sign up

@tom @j12t

100% and, if we're being honest, the quality of sports content over here is pretty poor too.

When Threads federated quite a few US sports teams etc turned it on but Threads shouldn't be the answer 👀

The 'joining' of the Open Social Web really needs improvement and, thankfully, there's a handful of people who are working on it in their respective areas

@saskia you should run a session at FediForum about that!
