Today is my tenth BIRDERVERSARY! I became a birder accidentally, by keeping a list of birds on a trip to Iceland "for my mom," who then pointed out it was a good start on a lifelist.

My co-protagonist @span yaypie says the precise moment of Birderfication was clearly when I painstakingly stalked a rock ptarmigan around the Skaftafell National Park campground with my little phone camera. Which makes it today! Thank you, birds of Iceland, for this hobby that brings me such joy and peace.

#birding

A picnic shelter on a vividly green lawn in front of very close, very picturesque snow-capped mountains clothed in a scarf of cloud. On the left of the picnic shelter on the ground, a medium-sized brown ground bird with white legs and belly-splash is walking. The sun is bright, the shadows long: it's morning. The mountains, nearer green foothills, and world generally are almost aggressively pretty and picturesque. The bird is a LONG way away.

@span faerye @span yaypie @span handmade_ghost I’ve been birder adjacent for years thanks to a friend who’s pretty serious. Today I found myself jumping up ready to record an unfamiliar springtime call that’s coming from outside the house, and I thought: wait, is this the moment? Am I in the cult? Or was it when I openly mused about whether it would be bad to buy binoculars? Was that the fatal slip?

@span kate @span handmade_ghost I feel like whenever you had to ask “wait, am I a birder?” is a decent point to consider a beginning! As long as they give you joy. sapsucker
