A striking chart of electricity consumption per capita data, compiled by an economics think-tank Ember, shows a sharp distinction between G7 and BRICS nations. The graph compares 15 major nations as to their electricity consumption per capita.

The leading electricity-per-capita nations are Canada, the United States, South Korea, and Australia.

Canada
2000 Demand per capita (kWh) 18,386
2024 Demand per capita (kWh) 15,708 Change -14.6%

Pretty significant change given the increase in population and GDP over those years ($774B to $2.16T in constant US dollars).

Bear in mind also that ~85% of Canadian generation is hydro/nuclear/renewables, with the remainder natural gas and coal.

@span Sir_Osis_of_Liver there is positive change here to be sure, but also the starting point is really bad.

The emissions growth was almost entirely from oil & gas in Alberta and Saskatchewan. The other provinces have been trending downward.

That also includes all sources, like transportation. Generation in Canada is pretty clean overall.

@span Sir_Osis_of_Liver oil & gas are a major part of the economy here, so you can't just hand wave that away

It could be better, certainly.

Given that 87% of Chinese generation is:

Coal 60.9%
oil 18.3%
natural gas 7.9%

I'm not going to get bent out of shape over it. At least it's trending in the right direction, and at a faster pace.

The major laggards are Alberta, Saskatchewan and to some extent Ontario, thought they're trying to boost nuke capacity.
