@amoroso hmm 40 years. Might be a good time for a friend to sell the nextstation he has in his basement since sometime in the 90s.

@mavu It still looks sleek and modern despite all those years.

@amoroso I'm occasionally allowed to touch the keyboard.
That is such a nice feeling thing.

@blake That's pretty cools as it goes back full circle to the first web server.

@blake Back then it was impossibly expensive for a hobbyist or student.

@amoroso I can imagine, a fantastic bit of kit though, and what a design. Most of my student days stuff was done on Sun spark hardware or old Mac gear I had bought secondhand.

@amoroso Exactly 😊 it’s even called frog as a reference to frog design :)

@span amoroso

In 1989 I managed to convince the CS department to buy a Cube (in part for FrameMaker DTP, in part for the DSP). For me at least, it was transformative, eclipsing the Sun workstations around it in terms of productivity and functionality.

A minor twist on the Apple acqui-merger: My understanding from several engineers is that by then the OS was basically being mothballed in favour of focussing solely on WebObjects.

@span mmalc I had a friend who used a Cube and saw it running a few times. It was impressive at the time and still is.

@span amoroso I wanted a NeXT box *so much* back in the day. Hell, I'd buy one *now* if I had room for it. Astonishing machines.

@span marsroverdriver Back in the day NeXT and other workstations were obscenely expensive for hobbyists like me.
