someone please make an image search system that filters out #generativeAI images

it is so, so miserable to search for images now.

In exchange for asking my students not to use #generativeAI, I've pledged to them that *I* won't use it. That means I will not use generated images for slides, for example, among other things (no generated summaries, no generated lectures, nothing).

But the slop is so ubiquitous that even looking for (for example) a picture of the pragmatist philosopher John Dewey returns AI-generated images.

To be blunt, this fucking sucks.

@rwg John Dewey would have laughed at that...

@span rwg Pinterest was filled up with mislabeled things, modern art, and bad reconstructions long ago. I think that the future of search is probably an arsenal of specialized tools like it was for academics in the oughties.

@span rwg For pictures of notable people, I’ve always gone straight to Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dewey

@span benjamingeer @span rwg Wikimedia Commons is really good for a lot of other types of images too including background wallpaper, diagrams etc. I try using Duck Duck Go's "Hide AI Images" feature which is imperfect but helps some.

@fschoubben this seems slightly better, but I think the "no AI" bit refers to DuckDuckGo's summaries, not the results. There are a few images in a search result that look AI-generated. And to be fair to DuckDuckGo, how is the engine supposed to sort out non-AI-generated images?

@rwg the AI-podcast-generator CEO who called those who avoid AI content as "lazy luddites" has no idea how much effort it takes to avoid the slop and the chatbots.
