Child malnutrition in Gaza is reaching catastrophic levels, UNICEF has warned, with the latest evidence showing a record number of children suffering acute malnutrition. In August, 13.5% of children screened across Gaza were found acutely malnourished, up from 8.3% in July. The humanitarian situation is even worse in Gaza City, where famine was confirmed last month, with 19% of children admitted showing signs of malnutrition, an alarming rise from 16% in July. In raw figures, at least 12,800 children were identified as acutely malnourished in August, although UNICEF noted this number may be far higher as fewer children were screened due to the closure of 10 treatment centers in Gaza City and north Gaza amid "evacuation orders" and intensified Israeli aggression. Meanwhile, pregnant and breastfeeding women are facing severe food shortages, with one in five babies now born underweight or prematurely.
