An Israeli airstrike has killed one of Gaza’s most senior doctors in a “catastrophic” loss to the already decimated healthcare system. A number of family members were reported to have been killed alongside him.

Dr Marwan al-Sultan, a renowned and highly experienced cardiologist and director of the Indonesian hospital in the #Gaza Strip, is the 70th #healthcare worker to be killed by Israeli attacks in the last 50 days, according to Healthcare Workers Watch (HWW), a Palestinian medical organisation.

“This is part of a much longer and systematic atrocious targeting of healthcare workers sanctioned by impunity. This is a tragic loss of life, but also an obliteration of their decades of lifesaving medical expertise and care at a time when the situation facing Palestinian civilians is unfathomably catastrophic,” Alser added.

“He was a prominent scholar and one of the two remaining cardiologists left in Gaza. Thousands of heart patients will suffer as a result of his killing. His only fault was that he was a doctor. We have no option but to be steadfast, but the sense of loss is devastating.”

According to health officials, more than 400 dialysis patients, nearly 40% of Gaza’s dialysis community, have already died since the war began. They were not killed in airstrikes; they were killed by "Israel's" policy, by blockade, by the refusal to allow fuel through the gates.

The World Health Organization has raised urgent alarms, highlighting the complete exhaustion of kidney medication supplies and an acute shortage of dialysis equipment. Yet the borders remain sealed, the fuel remains blocked, and the machines remain off.

Last month, Israeli occupation forces destroyed the Noura al-Kaabi dialysis center in northern #Gaza. The facility was affiliated with the Indonesian Hospital, located in the northern part of the Strip, which has been repeatedly besieged by Israeli forces who have opened fire on anyone moving within its grounds.

An Israeli soldier disclosed in a Haaretz op-ed that the military's practice of using human shields in Gaza is far more common than acknowledged and that a recent investigation was intended to create the false impression that such incidents are infrequent.

“In #Gaza, human shields are used at least six times a day. If the Military Police want to do their job seriously, they should open at least 2,190 investigations,” the soldier stated.

The soldiers refer to #Palestinians forced to clear homes in this way as “Shawish” or “slaves.”

The Co-op Group, a member-owned retailer operating over 2,300 UK food stores, announced it will cease sourcing products from 17 countries including Israel due to "internationally recognised" human rights abuses and violations of international law. The retailer will stop selling Israeli carrots this month as part of its commitment to no longer stock Israeli goods. The decision follows a board review of the Co-op's role "in building peace" and reflects member voices.

Other countries on the prohibited list include Russia, Mali, Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran, Libya and Syria. This contrasts with other UK retailers like #Tesco, which continues sourcing from #Israel while avoiding Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories.
