Seth Purcell on modern science museums:

But now more than ever in history, kids need a break from the screens that all too many of them are sadly often plugged into by default, and connection to the real world instead.

These days most science outreach seems a pavlovian training to regard as boring anything that's not a game, dismiss learning as a burden if it takes effort, and reduce science to instagrammable media to scroll through while in line at the mall.

@amoroso Interesting. Yesterday we went to the Blasket Centre - a cultural museum. There were lots of physical displays and artefacts.

Just one room had interactive displays, which could be navigated by picking up one of a selection of chunky wooden cubes and putting it in a square depression next to the screen. Although this was still screen-based, the physical interaction was a nice touch. It wasn't explained either, which was fun.

@amoroso Photographs, written records, household items, boat reconstructions, audio recordings of some Blasket islanders speaking in Gaelic, etc., etc.

The lovely thing was that we went for a walk and just came across the Blasket Centre and wandered in.
