I really <sarcasm>love</sarcasm> how Windows lets me set a date and time for restarting after updates and then completely ignores my instructions and restarts earlier and wipes out work I was doing.

Microsoft's contempt for its customers is boundless.

This is one reason I do most of my computing on a Linux machine...

@dangillmor It probably is indicative of something that it is rather difficult to get macOS to reboot unattended over the objection of any running application.

@dangillmor @andrewdwilliams You say contempt, I say utter incompetence, but hey that’s quibbling

@dangillmor I still don't get - after too many years- why windows seems to live on rebooting regularly. All my other computers only need reboots after major OS updates...

@dangillmor At least the Linux apps are honest about them crashing now and then.

Is there really, in today's world, a compelling reason to have Windows installed on anything. I assume you are now past employer-mandated OS choices so what would make you deal with that?

@dangillmor I remember for me early on with 10 how it would just arbitrarily restart to do updates, while I was using the PC.

The responsibility for faulty software in microsoft products (as in Apple products — but that’s another matter) lies with its products development all the way down from the manager’s desk to the code monkey working on a call function. This is not to disparage all software developers because all of the good one will readily acknowledge that their industry is not replete with excellent coders (the reasons vary and are multitudes). It’s no different from any other ‘production’ runs, whether kitchen appliance, vehicles or aircrafts. The difference is microsoft is so big it doesn’t give a fig about its ‘captured’ market.

@dangillmor If you can help it, don't ever play fair with Windows. You can -- and should -- destroy ALL the automated update services so that you can update what you like, when you like. There are various methods and tools available to make this possible, and most are not very complex to apply -- although some redundancy is required because they really hate it when you do what they do. If you like, you can twist it around your finger almost as well as a Linux box, although it's less charming.

Just got a new laptop today, preloaded with 11.

It will never see the light of day.

@dangillmor That is one of the craziest things of Windows. It has been that way since at least XP.
