Something I wish journalists understood better: anyone can nominate an article for deletion on Wikipedia, which kicks off a week-long discussion — even if the article is perfectly acceptable and will ultimately be kept. This does not mean "Wikipedia is trying to delete XYZ!!"

@molly0xfff on the French Wikipedia, we have renamed our Pages à supprimer ("pages to be deleted") to Débats d’admissibilité ("eligibility discussion") in 2022 to try and make it sound less like deletion is the only possible or intended outcome of the process. Not sure if it has had any effect on the outside world though

@molly0xfff the world is messed up, you can't use X as placeholder anymore without causing missunderstandigs. 🙄

@molly0xfff Maybe to bring it up to peoples' attention you could do what they do: pick an article, flag it for deletion, and then bitch about it being up for deletion. Not all sloppy like I just said it, but like as a study in the absurdity of public reaction to this nonsense or something.

We could also, with permission from wiki obviously, stage a day of protest where we just flag whatever the hell we want that day. Maybe have wikipedia mess around and have a threshold to hide a page a day.

@molly0xfff It’s less “Wikipedia is trying to delete XYZ” and more “One of the eight billion people on Earth wants to delete XYZ from Wikipedia”.

The reality of the situation is probably why fascists don’t like Wikipedia. If we switch to clickbait titles for them: “Fascists editing Wikipedia hate this one simple trick”

@molly0xfff something I wish journalists understood better: anything. I want them to at least try to gain basic knowledge of the subjects they report on.

@molly0xfff@hachyderm.io Out of curiosity, if a malicious entity wrote a generative AI powered script to mass-nominate articles for deletion, along the lines of what we've seen with mass AI-generated issues and commits on GitHub, would there be a process to handle that or would it effectively DDoS the editors?

Half the time I see news articles about "Wikipedia is trying to delete XYZ!", I go look at the discussion and it's

Long column of "Keep" votes in a Wikipedia deletion discussion

I see the page is currently under *full* protection, which is rare. Think I'll avoid this area and head back to the relaxing, controversy-free area of trans content 🙃
