"The Open Source Initiative (OSI) has released its strategic roadmap for 2025, outlining critical initiatives designed to reinforce its role as a central authority in the Open Source ecosystem."

#StefanoMaffulli, 2025

This one sentence tells you everything you need to know about what's going wrong with the #OSI.

Like any Open Source maintainer, OSI have no authority whatsoever. They're only as central as we make them, by paying attention to what they say, and taking it seriously. Rather than forking their project en masse and leaving them to pontificate in our dust.

The proof of that is the way the people behind the OSI forked the FSF back in the late 90s. Quickly becoming the preeminent software freedom organisation.

If you want to protest the silent coup at the OSI (endorsing proprietary MOLE Training as "Open Source", dodgy election practices to prevent reform, etc), here's what we can do;

* sign the community petition calling for the full release of results for the 2025 OSI board election; https://codeberg.org/OSI-Concerns/election-results-2025

* Join @fsf or volunteer for the #GnuProject, and encourage others to do the same

* Launch or support a campaign for OSI reform

@span downey Intriguing, thanks for sharing. There's a few ways to interpret this release, but I note that the language used is 100% NGO-industrial complex;

"During his tenure, OSI expanded its global partnerships and strengthened its role as a trusted voice in public policy, licensing and AI governance.

Maffulli helped transform OSI from a primarily volunteer-run organization into a globally respected, professionally managed nonprofit ..."

Coming back to the 2025 OSI roadmap ...

" We’ve heard the concerns raised by different stakeholders around the Open Source AI Definition v1.0

...

By the end of 2025, we’ll provide clear, actionable recommendations for the OSI board to develop an updated version of the Open Source AI Definition. You can rest assured that we are working diligently to keep the Open Source relevant."
